Portrait of one of my favourite artists, Michael Kiwanuka.
If you're interested in seeing an in-depth breakdown of how I made Kiwanuka, you can read this: https://discover.therookies.co/2023/03/27/creating-a-digital-double-of-an-iconic-performer-from-photographic-reference/
Very please to share that this piece was published in 3D World Magazine!
I wanted to create my first digi double and likeness starting from scratch as opposed to with a scan and it was a tough challenge!
I learned about blendshapes and clusters, which I'm excited to dig into more in the future! It was very handy for playing around with the eyes.
The focus was on his head, so to gain a bit of time I scanned a jacket of my own (it suits him quite well I think). There was a lot of touch ups needed of course but it was a huge timesaver.
I used Texturing XYZ textures as a base for the albedo and the displacement, the rest was done in Substance, with a combination of both Zbrush and Mudbox for the skin detail.
The compositing was done by my good friend Laurent Chavalle https://www.artstation.com/laurentchavalle
